Preventative Dental Care
Preventative dentistry in Rockville, MD, is essential to maintaining good oral health for a lifetime. At Montgomery Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, it is our goal to ensure that patients remain free of dental diseases that can result in pain, embarrassment, and discomfort. If our dentists do uncover an oral health issue at your preventative care appointment, they have the skills and experience to offer you prompt treatment for it.
What to Expect at Your Bi-Annual Preventative Care Exam
Before Dr. Nouri or Dr. Aghaee checks your mouth for cavities, infections, broken teeth, or other common problems, you need to spend some time with one of our dental hygienists. The hygienist working with you removes plaque and tartar from your teeth by scraping them with a special dental instrument.
Even if you brush two or more times per day at home, you cannot always reach the plaque and tartar on your teeth the way our dental hygienists can. We may recommend that you return for a process known as planing and root scaling if the standard process fails to loosen all the plaque and tartar on your teeth. Plaque and tartar left on your teeth will eventually turn into bacteria that can cause tooth decay.
Polishing your teeth with an electric toothbrush comes next. The hygienist will point out any problem areas that you should pay special attention to at home and then carefully floss your teeth.
You may also need X-rays at your preventative care appointment. Most insurance companies only pay for one set of dental X-rays each year, so you should expect to need them at your next appointment if no one took them at your last appointment.
Caring for Your Oral Health Between Appointments
The foods and drinks you consume and how well you care for your teeth and gums at home play the biggest role in whether you have good or poor oral health. Be sure to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste after breakfast each morning and before going to bed each night. Flossing your teeth removes food particles your toothbrush cannot reach, while using mouthwash provides important protection for your gums.
Please schedule an appointment for preventative dentistry in Rockville MD if it has been at least six months since you have seen us.
